O'Neil entered the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when she was in high school. She made it to the top 100 rounds when judges applauded her vocal ability. Her performance was highly applauded by judges. However, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat in the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, top 3, and bottom 2. The judges were shocked by the outcome and urged fans to vote for those with great singing talent such as Melissa. O'Neil wasn't in the top 3 after numerous outstanding performance. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, where O'Neil advanced into the final two of the finals of the competition, Werner said that in the morning, newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
